What does my child’s rash mean?
My daughter is 4 and 2 days ago, she developed a fever of 102. Took her to doctor and she said she has a bladder infection. Yesterday, she developed bright red cheeks and blisters in her throat, underneath her tongue and on the inside of her bottom lip. Took her back to the doctor, she said it might be viral like hand, foot, and mouth disease. Today, her rash has spread to her legs, arms, wrists, hands, ankles and feet. She didn’t have a fever last night or all today, but tonight it spiked back up to 100. She does not have a rash on her stomach or back. Anyone have an idea? I’m taking her back to the doctor tomorrow.
What you’ve described is exactly what happens with hand, foot, and mouth disease. My oldest daughter had it when she was two years old (she’s nine now) and she looked terrible. It will go away. Give your daughter Tylenol for the fever since her temperature is 100. Don’t worry though, she will get better soon. It looks worse than it actually is.

Please help me, I think I have Lyme disease?
I tested negative for Lyme, but I’m worried it might have been a false negative. For the past few years, I’ve suffered from extreme fatigue, muscle pain, headaches, and sleep disorders. For the past year, it’s gotten worse. I have headaches constantly, my hands and feet are always numb and tingly, I’m exhausted, my knees hurt so much I limp, and I’ve been having personality changes. I used to be very upbeat; now I’m nasty and irritable, and I don’t understand why. I’m getting confused. I have visual hallucinations where I see things all the time that aren’t really there. I have no short term memory. I’m paranoid. I’m getting twitches in my face and legs. My skin hurts. I’m rarely hungry anymore. I have these weird cracks in the sides of my mouth. I can’t sleep. My heart is irregular.
I keep testing negative for Lyme, but I have a gut feeling I have it. If I do, I can’t afford treatment. Do I sound like I have it??
As someone who has dealt with Lyme for nearly 20 years, it sure sounds like Lyme is a very real possibility. One interesting thing you mentioned were cracks on the sides of your mouth – are they kind of like paper cuts? My Lyme specialist has said that is characteristic of Lyme. You need to find an LLMD to make sure your negative test result was accurate. Depending on the test you had, the results may be extremely unreliable.
www.lymediseaseassociation.org and www.ilads.org are good organizations that can refer you to a Lyme specialist in your area. If it ends up you DO have Lyme, don’t settle for 28 days of treatment. From what you’ve said, it sounds like you have a lot of neurological involvement and will need longer treatment. Always follow your gut because you know your body better than anyone else – even doctors.
As for what you can do to pay for treatment, many pharmacies now offer a month’s supply of oral antibiotics for only $4. Also, there are several organizations and drug companies that offer financial aid for Lyme patients. Be sure to discuss cost with your Lyme specialist because there are probably other combinations of medications that are equally effective and much less expensive.
