If you own a dog you know when it is not acting like usual. You then investigate. If the dog doesn’t seem to improve in a short time you call the vet.(depending on the symptoms) Of course any diarrhea, vomiting and blood would be good indications the dog needs a vet soon. But, lethargy and going off its feed are symptoms you may give a day or so to see if it continues. It’s really common sense!

Which isnt so common anymore?

Fatal Diseases in Dogs

fatal diseases in dogs
This may be a matter of life and death for my .. HELP QUICK! Bloody, blistery looking butt hole…?

I had come home just a few hours earlier and noticed all the sudden my anus is reed, swollen, bloody. . he’s licking it and rubbing it on the floor. My question is, should I be calling a vet 911 or just bring him first thing in the morning. I was checking online and the symptom could be part of . PLEASE HELP, I’ve had him for 10 years NO problems. I need this soon.
AND WHAT SHOULD I DO FOR NOW IF I DON’T NEED TO CALL FOR HELP? BABY WIPES? ALCOHOL? OH MY GOD IM SO SCARED!!
I NEED A NUMBER FOR THE EMERGENCY VET!!!!
AND I DONT HAVE A LICENSE, IT’S SUSPENDED, ITS 3AM AND EVERY ONE HERE IS SLEEPING. I HAVE NO ONE TO CALL.
i HAVE no MONEY.
NOT FOR TAXI, NOT THE EMERGENCY ROOM. I AM SCREWED.
I DID THE EPSOM SALT BATH THING AND IT SEEMS TO HAVE GONE DOWN HE’S NOT ACTING WEIRD, YOU CAN JUST TELL IT BOTHERS HIM ONLY WHEN IM LOOKING AT IT OR HE LICKS IT BUT ITS NOT AS OFTEN.

Likely the dog has an anal gland issue – not serious – just gross. Sounds like it may have or will ruptured.

1 – Deep breath for you.
2 – hot pack the dogs butt. don’t rub it don’t squeeze it hold it there. When the cloth is no longer warm – put on a different hot pack.
3 – make a solution of baking soda and warm water and apply with a cotton ball or soft cloth to wash the area out. pat dry and then put on some antibiotic ointment (bacitracin, neosporin etc)
4 – go to bed.

In a perfect world you would go to the vet – they would perhaps surgically remove the anal gland. This is NOT something that you have to go to an emergency vet for. as long as you keep doing the above. It sometimes can rupture and then all sorts of brown junk will come out. It will heal but you need to make sure you don’t get any secondary infections.

When it is healed – learn how to express the dogs anal glands because if they have trouble with it once – they will have it again. Add canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling) to your dogs diet. If it is reoccuring – vet will need to remove the gland.

Canine Liver Diseases

Ask a Vet: can pass from fox to
Q: I often see foxes in my neighborhood. Can they spread any diseases to my dogs? A: Foxes are in the same phylogenetic family, Canidae, as our domestic dogs. Therefore, many diseases that affect dogs can affect foxes and can be spread from one to the other. The most concerning disease from a human perspective is rabies. Contact with the saliva of a rabid fox can cause infection in a pet …

Dog Lyme Disease

dog lyme disease
My has , drinks water, but wont eat. I am also having trouble administing his meds, any help?

He bit me once when i tried to give him a pill. I am at a loss. Before i take him back to the vet tomorrow
any suggestions?
Also, he turns his head away from everything now. Pill pockets didnt work, rice, chopmeat, chicken, cheese…… HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Besides the obvious of hiding the medication in a treat, it can be very tricky. You can look for a pill gun but you still have to open the mouth to “pop” it in. Most medications can be compounded to a liquid if you think that would be easier but there are some that just wont take anything. There are some owners that bring their animal into the vet daily or however the vet works it out for an injection of the medication. Good luck and I hope he feels better!
