Is there such a thing as twisted stomach disease in dogs who eat real fast?
It is called GDV- Gastric Dilatation Volvulus. The stomach bloats and then twists. It is a true medical emergency for dogs. It can be caused by many factors.
Large, deep chested dogs are predisposed. Although it is more prevalent in large and giant breeds, it can happen to any deep chested breed. These type of dogs should be fed two to three smaller meals a day instead of one large meal and should not be heavily exercised within an hour before or after eating. Excessive drinking during heavy exercise can cause this as well.
Dogs that eat very quickly can tend to swallow a lot of air. This can cause bloat and possible torsion as well.
The only way to fix this problem is by surgery. The doctors will “untwist” the stomach and its contents remove via a tube. Often there is necrosis of some of the tissue because of lack of oxygen, due to the twist. The vet will have to remove all of this dead tissue. Once it’s seen that all remaining parts are normal and healthy, they do what is called a gastropexy. A flap of the outer wall of the stomach is placed over a rib and sutured back down. This prevents the stomach from twisting again.
After surgery the animal can still have a poor prognosis because of heart issues stemming from the twist and possible necrotic tissue.
It is horrible for the animal and extremely expensive for the owner.
