Human Parasitic Diseases

Parasitic ?

I’ve been reading and watching a lot about parasitic diseases. It seems like 1 out of 6 human beings are infected. I read about the symptoms but they sound like they can be confused with other illnesses. I’ve been to 3rd world countries and from my studies, that’s where we get most of these from. I know that it’s hard to prevent yourself from being a host….it’s not exactly what everyone is thinking about, it slips our minds. What should we do to find out if we’re infected?

There are internal parasites and external parasites.
Internal parasites-Malaria, Filariasis, Pinworm, roundworm, hookworm, tape worm, etc
External parasites-Pubic lice, Head louse, Scabies, etc
Parasitic infectious diseases
African trypanosomiasis – Amebiasis – Ascariasis – Babesiosis – Chagas – Clonorchiasis – Cryptosporidiosis – Cysticercosis – Diphyllobothriasis – Dracunculiasis – Echinococcosis – Enterobiasis – Fascioliasis – Fasciolopsiasis – Filariasis – Free-living amebic infection – Giardiasis – Gnathostomiasis – Hymenolepiasis – Isosporiasis – Kala-azar – Leishmaniasis – Malaria – Metagonimiasis – Myiasis – Onchocerciasis – Pediculosis – Pinworm Infection – Scabies – Schistosomiasis – Taeniasis – Toxocariasis – Toxoplasmosis – Trichinellosis – Trichinosis – Trichuriasis – Trichomoniasis – Trypanosomiasis

Question on human’s and Animals?

Can Animals catch off of human’s?i.e cold’s,etc could a ,,cow, pig, llama, horse, pony or smaller animal catch a virus/bug or cold or infectious of a human?

There are diseases that can be passed between different species they are Zoonotic diseases. Some viruses mutate so they become zoonotic which is what they are worried about with the Avian Flu.

Genetic Diseases Definition

Which statement best reflects the modern definition of mutation?

Which statement best reflects the modern definition of mutation?

Changes in an organism’s original DNA.
The genetic code for a gene.
DNA changes that cause disease.
An abnormal section of DNA.
A section of DNA analyzed in criminal investigations.

Changes in an organism’s original DNA

Mutation usually only happens when a cell is in the process of dividing when it has only a half strand of DNA. If the DNA is complete, the cell can usually sense an ionization event that damaged a site on the strand and actually repair the DNA. However, with only half the DNA, any ionization event can damage the DNA and the cell has no way to know it happened, so it replicates the damaged portion. Mutations can only be passed on to offspring IF it happens in a reproductive cell. YOU undergo mutations in your cells all the time from external radiation causing ionization events in your cells. Many cancers are caused indirectly by radiation damage to DNA. Mutation can be beneficial, in that it enhances a cell’s ability to survive. Or it can be benign and have absolutely no effect on the cell at all. Or lastly, it can be detrimental and cause the cell to malfunction and die or become sterile and never divide, or go crazy and divide rapidly forming a tumor. Mutation is the answer tot he chicken/egg controversy. A close relative of the chicken laid an egg which was modified by radiation. Enough changes later in the reproductive cells of successive generations and we eventually get an egg which hatches into a chicken as we know it today from an animal which was NOT a chicken to begin with.
