Whats the best supplement?

For focus, energy, alertness… and so on. I’m looking for the best herbal supplement for someone who has ADD. Anything for focus and concentration. What would be the best ones out of this list?

* Essential oil – for Mental Clarity, Focus -
* Black Pepper – for Mental Focus, Headache -
* Brahmi – for Alzheimer’s disease, attention deficit disorder (ADD), memory problems, and Parkinson’s disease -
* Club Moss – for Alzheimer’s -
* Dandelion leaves – for Alzheimer’s disease -
* Eleuthero – for Concentration and focus -
* Ginko Biloba – for Brain Function -
* Ginseng – for Boost mood, improve memory -
* Gotu Kola – for Memory, concentration -
* Horsebalm (Mondara) – for Memory -
* Peppermint essential oil – for Mental clarity -
* Periwinkle – for Mental Aging, Dementia -
* – for Poor memory, fatigue -
* Yerba mate – for Increasing concentration -

I am a great believer in nutritional supplements and in proper diet for health. I do suggest that you understand the brain chemistry in ADD and ADHD before deciding upon any course of medication or nutritional supplements. If you are on medication, check for interactions in anything else you take for the condition. That said, your homework to include ADD/ADHD discussion board sites. You will find some anecdotal narratives about the good, the bad and the undetermined.

From your list, which I like by the way although it is not complete, I would select:

Club Moss and also a compound from a type of Club Moss would probably be near the top of the list. Huperizine A for cognition. It functions as a cholinesterase inhibitor in the brain which leads to increasing the levels of neurotransmitters. It appears to enhance memory. (My husband has been taking it for almost 2 months for cognition issues related to PD – he has thought that he had ADD for many years. It has been of benefit)

Siberian Ginseng which covers the Eleuthero and ginseng categories is another contender for the top of the list because it appears to improve memory and concentration. At the same time it seems to help the homeostasis fo the mood-determining brain chemicals and this is where it is very important because that includes not only dopamine (the Parkinson’s-ADHD link) but also norepinephrine (another PD depletion link), epinephrine (stress response) and, drum-rolll please) the often-overlookedneurotransmitterr, serotonin.

The last from your list for the top of the charts is Yerba Mate because it contains polyphenols, vitamin A, C and B-complex and caffeine which may bind to certain receptors to aid dopamine survival.

I’m sorry but I am just not familiar with Brahmi. The others on the list include antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, antibacterials and might be beneficial as well but they are not my top choices.

Please don’t overlook dietary deficiencies because there may be a connection to the long-chained fats (EPAs and DHAs) There has also been discussion of iron and zinc deficiencies but that is a dangerous area to tread for supplements. You would have to begin slowly with diet and even then be on the lookout for s meal containing both.iron-rich foods and calcium-rich foods at the same time because the calcium can block the absorption of iron. And too much iron can block the absorption of zinc, iron and manganese (dietary form is not the same as the heavy metal exposure in PD)

It is also important, it is felt to avoid synthetic food coloring, flavorings and preservatives.

A proper ADHD diet will provide a good level and type of fat (for brain and central nervous system function); will avoid mineral deficiencies and be high in antioxidants.
