Why do we research the rarest disorders?
Why do we [or should we] study rare diseases and disorders (such as CdLS)?
And not just focus the big ones such as cancer and diabetes? Diseases that are a little more relevant to our society?
This question was given to my class by a professor and it will be a focus for the final exam. I have an idea why we do this, but I was hoping others might have many other opinions.
Can you help answer this question with any of your ideas?
Well I think there are a few points to be made here.
1. There are massive amounts of research being conducted into the “big ones”. There are continually new medications being developed for the prevention and treatment of diabetes, and there are many treatments just around the corner for a whole range of cancers.
2. Although research into rare conditions may seem to only benefit small numbers of people, this research will ultimately lead to a better understanding of human pathology as a whole and give us valuable insight into the working of the human body.
3. Often the the development of a treatment for one condition will lead to breakthroughs in other areas, sometimes by accident. A good example of this is the development of gabapentin(and more recently pregabalin) as anti-epileptics, but also turned out to be very useful for the treatment of neuropathic pain.
I’m sure there are researchers out there that could give far better examples of studies into rare conditions that lead to breakthroughs in other, more prevalent conditions.

Did I get my cats sick?
I have had a cold for 10 days, and it ended up turning into a horrible case of pink eye…my cats have been sleeping with me as they usually do, and they both started sneezing the other night…im worried they could be infected with whatever i had and i don’t know if i should keep them away from me till they are better, or vice versa, im really trying to get myself better so i can go to work so i can make money so i can take them to the vet….it seems like it could easily turn into a problem if my cats and i have a communicable disease
I don’t actually think pet’s can get sick from a human.Maybe they were sneezing for fun to copy you, cause actually cat’s have sensitifity if your sick and love to cuddle up next to you and make you feel warm and help you feel better.Maybe there was something in the room like dust but i really don’t think they can get sick after you!!!
