The Fight Against Infectious Diseases: Partnership in Health

If there was a cure for all tropical diseases, development in Africa would be the same as it was in Europe?
agree or not? why?
This is a great question. Tropical diseases have slowed the progress of major construction projects like the Panama Canal and Trans-American Highway. It has caused a lack of infrastructure that helps to build a cohesive society.
Contrary to some complainers, Africa has the resources to build itself. It is the constant in-fighting between tribes, regions, and factions within the regions, religious and otherwise.
For an example, look at the US before and after the Interstate system.
For another, look at Europe and England before and after the development of the canal systems.
The ability to move goods and people easily, allows commerce beyond the local, increases the exposure to goods and ideas from outside the region and forces the individual man to see himself as part of something larger. In this way, the people of the US think of themselves as Americans first and not Yankees and Southerners anymore.
You can ALWAYS complain that one group puts down another but if the fighting and violence persists inside any group. Any other group would be put-off by it. Africa has always been violent, when a real infrastructure is in place, perhaps that violence will end. When the tropical diseases are better controlled (without worrying about saving the vectors) then the infrastructure can be more easily built.
Billions of dollars go into Africa, it is Africa who decides how to spend it.

UT Scientists and Clinicians Are Innovators in Autoimmune and Autoinflammatory Disease Research and Care
Autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases are on the rise and researchers and physicians at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston are at the forefront of efforts to stem the tide. These diseases are often hard to diagnose and often affect individuals differently.

Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi. This disease is transmitted to humans by ticks. Lyme arthritis was recognized as a clinical manifestation in 1976. Researchers at Yale University investigated a cluster of arthritis in children from the three contiguous communities of Old Lyme, Lyme, and East Haddam, Connecticut. If left untreated it can spread to other organs and cause permanent damage to joints, heart and nervous system.
Lyme disease is diagnosed based on symptoms, physical findings, and the possibility of exposure to infected ticks. Laboratory testing is required to confirm the presence of Borrelia burgdorferi in the system of the host. Most cases of Lyme disease can be treated successfully with a few weeks of antibiotics. Steps to prevent Lyme disease include using insect repellent, removing ticks promptly, landscaping, and integrated pest management.
Microbiology:
Borrelia burgdorferi is a Gram negative bacteria belonging to the group of spirochete. It is a highly specialized, motile, two-membrane, spiral-shaped bacteria which lives primarily as an extracellular pathogen. It can survive inside the host for months even years. It has an unusual genome which consists of linear chromosomes and many linear and circular plasmids. 21 different plasmids were found, which represents the largest known complement of plasmids of all bacteria and constitutes one third of the spirochete’s DNA.
Laboratory testing has confirmed that most of the virulence of the bacteria is linked to plasmids. After growing bacteria in cultures, results have shown that Borrelia loses some it’s plasmids and was unable to contract the disease in the laboratory animals.Â
